Professor, Georgetown University, History
John Lewis Gaddis talked about his book The Cold War: A New History, published
by Penguin Press. In his book he categorized the Cold War as a necessary
conflict that settled divisive world issues. He called the Cold War a "movement
from fear to hope," and described the roles played by Ronald Reagan, Mikhail
Gorbachev, and Margaret Thatcher during the Cold War. The author had access to
newly-released documents from the archives of the former Soviet Union and China.
Professor Gaddis reassessed the Cold War in the Mortara Center for International
Studies' first Distinguished Lecture in Diplomatic History. Following his
presentation, Professor Gaddis responded to questions and comments from members
of the audience. Professor McNeil moderated the event.
