Presumably US subs would have sunk more ships. But not necessarily a great
many more, since bad torpedos were not the only problems they were having at
the time. It took a while to work out winning tactics and identify winning
captains. Better radar helped. Simply having more subs on patrol helped.
Sometime in 1943 things began coming together, just in time for better
torpedos to come along as well.
