>Where were the lines in Italy on VE day?
German forces in Italy surrendered on
4/29/1945, effective 5/2, which was
six days before V-E Day (5/8).
In the interval, Allied forces basically
overran all northern Italy. The leading
forces of U.S. 5th Army reached the Brenner
Pass in the Alps, on the border with Austria,
where they linked up with U.S. 7th Army
moving across south Germany.
Popski's Private Army, a leading element
of British 8th Army, was at Tarvisio, in
the very NE corner of Italy, on 5/8.
Other elements of 8th Army had occupied
Trieste, at the head of the Adriatic,
on 5/2.
