Base Unit? At the end of the war when demobilization was in full swing, GIs
returning from overseas duty were assigned to the base unit at the
separation center where they were being processed out of the service.
Although they were assigned to that unit, they rarely if ever knew anyone
who worked there or even had any duties to perform other than appearing at
the processing center on the day and time ordered.
