I wasn't aware of this. I remember I read somewhere (in an English text)
something like, "as for the British [Commonwealth] troops, also due to their
stiffer morals, more or less all that was left to them in the way of having
a sexual life was self-obtained release and dreaming away over the
girlfriend's letters from home". Just paraphrasing, but that was the
concept. I'm glad to know they were more human than that stereotype
stated... or perhaps that was only referring to troops in the combat zone.
On the other hand, Cairo brothels and night fun were much better and more
than anything the Axis could find in Tripoli or Benghazi. So even stiff
moralists could supposedly enjoy a fair opportunity of changing their minds.
