Depends on the application. Plain bearings can be used instead of ball
bearings in many cases. Plain bearings require more and better
lubrication, but they can be used instead of ball bearings, unless the
original design put ball bearings only in places where they are
absolutely needed. Knowing German design principles, I doubt that was
the case...
