You need to obtain/rent a video/dvd of 'Shoa'. It's one of the longest
documentaries ever made, but there is a sequence dealing with the
operation of gas vans in Poland. It quotes from correspondence by the
S.S. with the manufacturer of the Saurer vans, and there are
interviews with witnesses (including an account of one of the vehicles
skidding off the road and spilling its half gassed occupants out).
There are a number of written accounts of early experiments with a
converted bus, and I have seen pictures of it with primitive murals of
people eating and and drinking painted on the filled in windows. I
believe that similar vehicles were used in Germany as part of the
euthanasia programme, and I recall that a Lutheran bishop describes
the local children calling it the 'murder van' in a letter to his
opposite number.
