Well, "modern history" was a dodgy thing in British universities, In

I did European History 1789 - 1989 at La Trobe University, Melbourne. The
lecturer (a Scotsman) made a point of pretending that the American
Revolution didn't happen- and made no references to events in Britain and
America. It was all about the glory of the French Revolution and how it
impacted the rest of the world. Amazingly parochial.
