I've seen the Monty/Freyberg version and no other several times, but it is
entirely possible that each of those is repeating the same source which in
turn is not necessarily accurate. It is however a neat story that says
something both about the NZ soldiery and about Montgomery's lack of
excessive formality with the troops.
