I would hazard to say that it is much less than completely irrelevant. For
one thing, if the soldiers and NCOs of an army or a formation thereof lack
confidence in their leaders, it effects their morale and therefore their
effectiveness in battle. Moreover, it seems to me that nine times out of ten
the men at the sharp end are very good at sussing out how good or bad their
generals are, even when they may ascribe the wrong reasons for that
performance.
