I think that's "was" idolized, and US accounts are more mixed than
extremely critical.
He was a very easy person to misunderstand, much of that being his
own fault. For example, he was flexible and well able to change
plans fast when warranted, but maintained the reputation that
everything went according to his plan. That cost him a certain
amount of respect.
My opinion is that he was very good, although not the best of the
Western generals.
