I'm not questioning the fact itself, but I wonder if it was over
Southern France? My father's group made some raids over the Rhone
Valley, but that was before his arrival on the scene IIRC.

Author Joseph Heller was a bombardier in a B-25 unit that flew in the
MTO; other than that, Catch-22 is pure fiction. He explicitly denied
in later life that his comrades and commanders were anything like the
characters depicted in the novel.
