The *other* real question is how long the Japanese could have
afforded to pay for oil and other strategic supplies. Japan
didn't have a large modern economy like, say, Britain's, and
Britain was unable to pay for all needs with available foreign
exchange.
Willmott wrote in one of his books that the Japanese were going
to run out of money to spend about Spring of 1942, and I don't
think anybody was keen on Lend-Leasing them materiel for their
war in China.
