Have you any documentary proof?
I ask only because this story has been going around for decades (I first
heard it as a schoolboy over four decades ago) and the perfectly reasonable
objection from my history teacher (who was a decorated veteran of the RAF)
was that the RAF certainly wouldn't risk a perfectly serviceable aircraft
and its crew on such a fool's errand.
