Subject: Re: Axis Use of Decoy Aircraft

I was wondering if the related story of the German "wooden airfield"
in the Netherlands was indeed true or just a myth. The story goes
something like this:

The Germans for months had been building a wooden airfield complete
with wooden defenses and fake aircraft in Holland to fool the Allies.
Yet since it had taken so long to construct, the Allies had passed
over it many times and took photos of the construction. Once
completed, the Allies sent a single aircraft and dropped a symbolic
wooden bomb on it!

Seems ridiculous, but the Germans were known to waste lots of time and
energy as well as resources on ridiculous war machines and endeavors.
Just think Wind Cannon and Maus tank and the wooden airfield doesn't
seem all that implausible.
