I was under the impression that the US dropped Gehlen some time after
because it turned out that his agents weren't really his at all, but really
working for the KGB, or whatever they were called that week...

The BND was never the Gehlen Organisation. The Gahlen Organisation was a
direct contractor to the US government, the BND is an organ of the German
government.
