The B-24D appeared in early 1943. However,
earlier models of B-24 were in service in
1942, and they too had plenty of range.

On June 6, as the battle of Midway wound
down, a group of 4 B-24s from Hawaii
staged through Midway for an attack on
Wake Island. (The attack failed; the B-24s
never even found the target.)

Wake is nearly as far from Midway as Oahu,
so if a raid from Midway to Wake was thought
possible, a raid from Oahu to Midway should
have been possible.
