After you did the inplace upgrade of XP did you reinstall the motherboard
drivers? While it doesn't always happen that the MB drivers get dumped or
damaged, you should download and reinstall all drivers after an inplace
upgrade to make sure that the drivers didn't get replaced when you did the
upgrade.
Go to the computer manufacturer's website and find your model. Go to the
driver's/software page of the site and find your drivers.
And, of course, you have totally eradicated the virus by using appropriate
software. Run more than one antivirus scanning program to verify that all
has been removed.
