That area of the Save in dialog is called the Places bar. You
can't have any more than 5 places in that bar, but you can
change each of the default locations. The easiest way to do
this is with a program available from Microsoft called TweakUI.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP

Direct Download of TweakUI
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once the program is installed, go to Start -> All Programs ->
Powertoys for Windows XP -> TweakUI.
Click the plus sign next to Common Dialogs and click on Places
Bar.
In the right hand pane, select Custom places bar.
You can now change any or all of the 5 default places to ones
of your choosing.

Here are a couple of articles with more info.

Keep in mind that Microsoft Office maintains its own common
places dialog. According to what I've read the limit there is
256 places.
