It shouldn't matter whether the printer's on or off, but is it on the local
computer or on a server?

If it's on a server, how exactly did you install the printer driver? Windows
will do a kind of autoinstall if you choose a printer on a server. That doesn't
work well with Office. It's better to go through the whole "choose a printer,
tell it you have a disk, lead the installer to the cd, ... yada ... yada ... "
routine. This ensures that the driver's on your own PC and not on the server.
