I'm probably the only guy any of you know, whose TV uses the most power
of any regular-day device. (we don't count the washer, power tools, etc
-- because we almost always just start the generator for those).

The thing about low-power lighting is just what you were talking about
-- it feels good, and they're looking for *joiners*. "Heh, heh -- if we
can get them to go along with this (seem Penn&Teller & recycling), we've
got 'em and we can get 'em to do just about anything."

It's also just plain fashion.

I want to learn more about this. It is just possible I could talk the
little lady into a new TV, if it would actually save us money by not
having to spend so much on gas to recharge the batteries after I stay up
late watching TV. Somebody forwarded me an article a while back, some
kind of consumer review, claiming that the new flat-screens were using
more power than the old ones. I'm skeptical, but I haven't sorted out
where to look for non-BS info.

I also have to extremely disagree with Matt B. about TV rotting the
brain -- I think he's just seeing the wrong stuff.

But I also have to put in a disclaimer, agreeing absolutely with the
"babysitter-function" portion. The worst offenders, in my mind, are the
specifically-targeted "children's programming" that's all vetted by the
proper edjacational authorities and whatnot. Fuck you, Sesame Street.
