The *MASON* poor that builds the lordly halls,

Sucks up the sweet of HONEY from the BEE;
Who worketh most to their share least doth fall,
With due desert *REWARD WILL nEVER BE*

it was considered a fit calling for the younger sons of minor
nobility:
an alternative to the celibate church, hence the term 'FREE' MASON,
as no person of servile origin could be a TRUE MASON,
merely a *BRICKLAYER* or *HOD-CARRIER* . In Anglo-Saxon times,
King Athelstan had the lords draw up the "Constitution" for these
master craftsmen of genteel origin. As master masons were "genteel,"
a rather fanciful history was invented for the guild: the Masonic
Fraternity had built the pyramids, the Temple of Solomon, on and on.
This gave them "status" above, say, a *SHOEMAKER* .
Masons were supposed to deport themselves as *GENTLEMEN* ,
and were held in high esteem.>>

*SHAKESPEARE*, the flower of the whole race, was born right
in the middle of it. It is a land of rolling pastures,
rising in higher folds to the westwards,
until they swell into the *MalVERn* Hills. There are
no towns, but numerous villages, each with its grey Norman
church. You have left the *BRICK* of the southern and
eastern counties behind you, and *EVERything is *STONE*--
*STONE* for the walls, and LICHENed
slabs of *STONE* for the roofs.

"I am sure we are honoured by your presence and to show you all we
know," said White MASON cordially. "Come along, Dr. Watson, and when
the time comes we'll all hope for a place in your book." We walked
down the QUAINT village street with a row of pollarded elms on each
side of it. Just beyond were two ancient *STONE* pillars, weather-
stained and LICHEN-blotched, bearing upon their summits a SHAPELESS
something which had once been the RAMPANT LION of Capus of Birlstone.
A short walk along the winding drive with such sward and oaks around
it as one only sees in rural England, then a sudden turn, and the
long, low Jacobean house of dingy, *liVER-colourED BRICK* lay before
us, with an old-fashioned garden of cut yews on each side of it.
As we approached it, there was the wooden drawbridge and
the beautiful broad moat as still and luminous
as *QUICKSILVER* in the cold, winter sunshine.

The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon - by Washington Irving

I had now come in sight of the [Lucy] house.
It is a large building of *BRICK* with *STONE* quoins,
and is in the Gothic style of Queen Elizabeth's day,
having been built in the first year of her reign. The exterior
remains VERy nearly in its original state, and may be considered a
fair specimen of the residence of a wealthy country gentleman of those
days. A great gateway opens from the park into a kind of courtyard in
front of the house, ornamented with a grassplot, shrubs, and flower-
beds. The gateway is in imitation of the ancient barbacan, being a
kind of outpost and flanked by towers, though evidently for mere
ornament, instead of defence. The front of the house is completely
in the old style with *STONE*-shafted casements, a great bow-window
of heavy *STONE*-work, and a portal with armorial bearings over
it carved in *STONE*. At each corner of the building is an
octagon tower surmounted by a gilt ball and weather-COCK.

. Chapter One
.
. A nEVER writer to
. an EVER reader:
. News.
.
In which Pickleherring takes his pen to tell
of his first meeting with Mr Shakespeare
.
One thing I can tell you that you'll perhaps not learn elsewhere.
Mr William Shakespeare nEVER minded a bit of rain. He sat under
the SPRINGing mulberry tree that grew in the middle of the COCK's
back yard. He had a damask napkin over his knee and a little
knife of silVER in his hand. He was opening oysters.
.
As for me, I had climbed up on the *RED-BRICK WALL* to keep him in my
sight. My friends mocked me. One of them said the man was from Wales,
and an alchemist. They said he could make GOLD, and fly in the air.
They said he was in Cambridge for blood for his lamp. I pretended
not to care. I did not want his Art, but I had no father.

He spent a few years publishing pamphlets protesting
James' policies. James was a Catholic, who was strongly
anti-Protestant. Defoe favored the Glorious Revolution
and supported William and Mary.
.
Defoe was born the summer of 1660 to James Foe, a BUTCHER of Stroke
Newington. From 1695 to 1699 he was accountant to the commissioners
of the *GLASS* duty and the associated with a *BRICK* & TILE works
in Tilbury. Phenomenally industrious, Defoe produced in his last
years also works involving the supernatural, THE POLITICAL HISTORY
OF THE DEVIL (1726) and AN ESSAY ON THE HISTORY AND REALITY
OF APPARITIONS (1727). He died on 24 April, 1731.
