Who does this position will report to?: Manager of Applications Development



Why is there a need for a consultant/contractor?

Perm position open as a result of attrition.



What is the start date?: ASAP...



What is the size of department?:

This particular group is a group of 10, but the whole department is almost 50



What projects will the consultant be involved with?:

There are several complex and interesting development projects going on at the moment. It's TBD as to which engineer will be assigned to which project.

There is always maintenance to do. Nobody gets to play with the new stuff without maintaining the old stuff...



Responsibilities:

Hands on technical contributor for the software development organization.

Collaborate with other engineers identify and resolve technical test issues and take these issues to completion.

Lead efforts to define and write design documents, & project plans. Serve as an example to junior engineers on how to perform these functions.

Develop fixes for complicated bugs, implement new features, perform unit testing, and make recommendations for major enhancements to resolve customer problems.

Effectively document technical issues, changes to code, etc.

Senior Engineer will probably have to provide direction for more junior engineers.

Regularly lead and participate in design reviews, code walk-throughs, etc.

Provide progress reports to program leaders, and senior engineering management.



Role with the group: Software Engineer



Required Skills:

Java J2SE is a must... J2SE Version 1.4 is good, J2SE 5.0 ( J2SE ver. 1.5 ) is better

BS or MS computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering

Solid understanding of RMI - Remote Method Invocation

2+ years developing in a Java Swing environment

Perfect communication skills

3+ years industrial server side Java development

Some Unix development

3+ years experience in product development for custom computer systems, and/or networking technologies and/or products.

Solid SQL Skills including RDBMS creation ( not just JDBC or connecting to a database)

Interview process?

The process starts out with a 20 minute phone screen.

If a candidate gets past that, there will be an in-person interview that generally lasts about 2 hours. The first 90 minutes are conducted in a group setting with 3 or 4 engineers, and the last 30 minutes is with the Manager of Applications Development.
