Does anyone have any comments on the relative performances of
Sherman, Prentice, and Colonel Appler at Shiloh. Macpherson, and
Shelby Foote seem to unequivocally condemn Appler. Woodworth, in
_Nothing But Victory_ has some rather harsh words for Sherman, and
says Prentice may have been using Appler as a scapegoat. Woodworth
also points out the exposed position of Appler.
One remark - it is poor practice for a commanding officer, such as
Sherman, to issue a reprimand to a subordinate officer in front of his
men. Undermines authority, and is more likely to create resentment
and defiance than compliance particularly when the subordinate is
right.
