It's apparently held as outstanding work from the 3 reviews at amazon
that are linked.
I'd ike for the critic here to explain why it's considered "pathetic,"
which means to me pitiful and sad, though she seems to make it an
ideological "Protetant Ethic" shill.
I haven't read more than a couple of (seemingly) anthropology oriented
books, so let me know.
I liked GREEN MANSIONS ( fascinating tribal cultures in South America)
and also THE NAKED APE (very biological explanations though far from
academic boredom--probably almost banned in Boston).
I know they were popular literature in their times in the mid 20th
century.
Also, I think I took at least one or maybe two quarters of basic
anthropology and less of formal sociology in college.
I'll take pop anthropology & pop psychology & pop sociology (Vance
Packard fun, and Wm White's THE ORGANIZATION MAN any day).
I suppose this haughty book isn't dumbed-down to be popular, so
scholars can have it to enjoy dry theory and to achieve academic
degrees.
