The South did not fire on Ft. Sumter because they desired war.
Lincoln deliberately sent a fleet of ships with men and supplies to
reinforce the fort, and rather than wait for it to be resupplied with
food, arms, ammuntion, and soldiers, the Southern military decided to
take it before they arrived. He could have chose not to provoke them,
but did so with deliberation.
