Remember the USS Panay incident in the late 1930s? US
warship gets strafed and sunk in Chinese waters by Japanese
fighters?
An American photographer TOOK newsreel-quality movies of the
event, clearly showing the Jap fighters against the
background an incredibly huge US flag flying from the Panay.
FDR personally requested the newsman's employers suppress
the film footage, the Japanese formally apologized and wrote
out a few checks to the families of the dead and the USN.
Nobody was ready to do a full-on war in the Pacific yet.
Just saying... maybe neither Assad nor Olmert are quite in
shape to start screaming "Respect my authoritay!" yet. And
since the Alawites who run Syria are the Persians' pet
Arabs, this may indicates that Israel figures this raid
won't kick over any overpowering retaliation from Iran,
either.
