This is how the bully-boys on the Right manage
to delude themselves into thinking that they are
so wonderful. If someone gets a bad reputation, then
it is simply reassigned in the mental filing cabinet,
and attributed to the Other Side.

Hitler wasn't a Catholic, no, he must have been a Pagan,
a Satanist, a homosexual, anything but a Catholic.

That is pure historical revisionism. Hitler had a Catholic
education, his speeches about God, family, and country
were nearly indistingishable from the rhetoric of the
Christian Right, today.

Someone like Mussolini, especially in country that
is home to the Vatican, could not come to power with
the Church's backing. Mussolini knew that. Conservatives
today do not want to admit it- that the authoritian tendencies
of the Catholic Church translated into support for authoritarian
(read: dictatorial) governments.
